Limestone is a good place to start. A common size of crushed limestone is .75"-1". Crushed stone is important because it binds together under compaction. Limestone has the additional benefit of helping with odors. A layer of 3"-4" of crushed limestone, compacted in lifts, will create a solid, level, and well draining base below stall mats. For additional leveling, an installer can also choose to top the limestone with a layer of .25"-.50" crushed stone. These smaller stones spread smoothly and pack hard when compacted. Once the stone is level, compacted, and at the correct height within the stall floor, simply top with a horse mat.
